The One Hundred-Fifteenth United States Congress was the meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from January 2, 2017 to January 3, 2019, during the first two years of the presidency of Laura Montez.
Major events[]
- January 3, 2017: The House of Representatives voted to decide the presidency in accordance with the contingent election provision of the Twelfth Amendment, as no candidate had received a majority of electoral votes cast in the 2016 presidential election. The House was required to choose between Selina Meyer and Bill O'Brien. No candidate received a majority of votes in the House.
- January 5, 2017: Laura Montez was elected by the Senate as Vice President-elect of the United States. As no candidate received a majority of votes in the House vote, and House Speaker Jim Marwood refused to schedule another House vote, Montez immediately ascended to the presidency on January 20, 2017.
- July 13, 2018: A congressional caucus known as the Jeffersons, represented by New Hampshire Representative Jonah Ryan, voted against a bill to raise the debt ceiling. A government shutdown subsequently followed. The shutdown would end on August 6, 2018.
