General George Maddox served as the United States Secretary of Defense from 2013 to 2015 under President Stuart Hughes. He was a presidential candidate in the 2016 primaries.

He is portrayed by Isiah Whitlock Jr.

Background[]

Personal[]

He is viewed by those around him as being ornery and stubborn, with Kent Davison saying he is living up to his name by being "as mad as an ox". He is married with one daughter and lives on a large estate in Virginia.

Politically, Maddox is described as being more conservative than others in the party, with Danny Chung being described as more liberal and Selina Meyer being described as moderate. This conservatism manifests itself when he refuses to change his pro-life stance, even if it would help him politically.

Professional[]

He previously served in the United States military, where he rose to the rank of General. He was later selected by President Stuart Hughes to serve as Secretary of Defense.

Secretary of Defense (2013–2015)[]

Maddox is first introduced in Hostages as Maddox accompanies Selina as she takes a tour through Quantico and delivers a speech to the marines.

He is confrontational with Selina during the Uzbek Hostage Crisis because he feels she is ill-equipped to handle the crisis, both because she has only recently stepped into foreign policy and her relative naivete.

Shortly before President Hughes announces he would not be seeking re-election in the 2016 election, Maddox resigns as Secretary of Defense, putting the Meyer team into chaos as he could be a big competitor in the primaries. After Jonah Ryan posts a picture of the Meyer team in chaos following the announcement, Hughes moves up his announcement to that day. When Hughes reverses his position on abortion, Maddox sticks to his pro-life stance.

In Fishing, Selina is encouraged to convince Maddox not to run in the primaries. Despite offering him the role as her running mate, he announces his candidacy. He ends up being one of Selina's rivals for the party nomination. After coming in last place in the debate, his favorability is soured. He drops out of the primaries shortly after the Iowa caucus. He endorses Danny Chung shortly after dropping out.

Maddox appears again at the 2016 National Convention, one of those Selina is considering to be her running mate, along with Danny Chung and Tom James. She ultimately decides against choosing him after his personality and sense of humor turns her off.
