The Uzbek Hostage Crisis occurred in late 2014/early 2015, in which several American students were kidnapped and held hostage. It was later revealed that one of the hostages was a spy, which led to President Stuart Hughes announcing he would not seek re-election.
On November 4, 2014, it was revealed that in Uzbekistan, several young Americans were kidnapped. On January 6, 2015, President Stuart Hughes, Vice President Selina Meyer, Secretary of Defense George Maddox, General Mercer, and many others met in the situation room as the hostages were freed.
Later that January, news breaks that one of the hostages was a spy, and that Hughes knew one was a spy. Selina issued a statement while in Helsinki "I stand with the President." In an interview with Janet Ryland, Selina apologized on behalf of the administration for deceiving the public.
The Hostage crisis drastically lowered Hughes' favorability, even within his own party. Hughes announced in mid-2015 that he would not seek re-election for his own party.
